St. Petersburg, Russia is one of the most beautiful cities. Stunning orthodox churches, palaces, museums and statues dot the main riverfront and local parks.
The Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary was rebuilt from 1895 and was the first church with aluminium covered domes. Closed by the Soviets in 1935, it was used as a warehouse and then in 1956 converted to an artificial ice rink. Restoration began in 1991 and continues to the present time.
Along with the old, St. Petersburg is building many new, huge and very modern facilities to house visiting tourists.
The Winter Palace gates show the royal two-headed eagle symbol.
The Winter Palace has been restored after a fire in 1837 that burnt most of the building. Fortunately they were able to save much of the stunning artwork.
